My Web Sites

On this page are some sample images and descriptions of web sites/projects that I have been involved in. Some of the images contain generic data as the original contents may have been for internal use only. They sites are listed in no particular order.

Site: LCT Student Union site

Live URL: N/A

A site designed for the Student Union at the college that required, most notably, a news and events page, a gallery system and a Content Management System for these features. The site is currently finished pending the finalised content of some static pages. It is coded with Classic ASP for the user front end, while the admin section is coded using ASP.NET. The site makes use of AJAX for the events calendar when cylcing between months and when checking events for a specific day. That site also uses dynamically created JavaScript event handlers to set up the AJAX controls and to process links that should open in a new window. This means the site validates as XHTML Strict (in which the target attribute is removed).

The CMS was coded with ASP.NET both to help me learn the technology, but also to take advantage of it's built in libraries for file and image handling for use with the gallery on the site. I similarly decided to use AJAX in order to learn something new.

Site: LCT Print College site

Live URL: Leeds College of Technology Print College

A sub-site of the Leeds College of Technology homepage. The design is based off the homepage (this was designed externally) in order to keep the branding consistent between this and other sub-sites. I attempted to simplify the design where possible, both to improve the ease of maintenance and the contextual structure of the page. For example, the navigation links were changed to text links for better page indexing.

The content came from the previous Print College site, with some updates and modifications along the way. Again, the structure of each page has been greatly improved in comparison with the old site, which was an out-dated table layout. Most of the site images are modifications of photos received from the marketing department.

Site: LCT Business Solutions site

Live URL: Leeds College of Technology Business Solutions

A sub-site of the Leeds College of Technology homepage. As with the other college sub-sites, the design is based off the homepage for consistent branding between sites. The layout is from the same base as the other sub-sites and as such, it shares the same structural improvements on all pages.

Site: LCT Work Based Learning site

Live URL: N/A

A sub-site of the Leeds College of Technology homepage. The site is as yet unfinished pending some changes to the original content.

Site: LFF re-branding

Live URL: N/A (old site: LFF)

Leeds Further Forward are currently in the process of re-branding, and as part of the team involved on the project, I came up with an initial template design for their new website. This included the use of the new logo (which I designed).

One of the requested features for the site was the ability to have the users of the site be able to set their own theming for the site, in terms of colours and backgrounds. To this end, I coded a JavaScript theme changer for the template which triggered background color/image changes when clicking on specific links (See the full size image below). The final site development has now been passed on to one of my colleagues and my role is now an advisory one.

Site: LCT Learning Base site

Live URL: N/A

A site on the Leeds College of Technology student intranet. I was approached by the head librarian at the college with the project of re-designing this site on the intranet. At that time, the site was quite dated and we decided that the Learning Base site should have it's own unique look and feel.

I produced a mock-up design in Photoshop and showed it to the staff involved and upon receiving positive feedback, I turned the design into a web page layout. The site has W3C standards compliant XHTML with CSS. I also took care to ensure the site maintained suitable accessibility when using non-visual browsers (i.e. screen readers etc)

Site: LCT Student Intranet site / Staff Intranet site

Live URL: N/A

A project to re-design the Leeds College of Technology student intranet. Unfortunately, this project was put on hold due to a change of plans before it could be implemented. The site at the time of ending had the following main features:

  • Content Management for some areas (including generic content pages, news and events calendar. (Classic ASP coding)
  • W3C standards compliant XHTML with CSS. 3 column layout.
  • Paged news item listings.
  • Paged events calendar that can be integrated onto any page, with links to event viewer.
  • Clean, accessible and degradable design.

The Staff Intranet was being designed alongside the Student Intranet project, and was also stopped by the change in plans. The site had many of the same features that the Student Intranet had, but in ealier stages of development.

Site: Bug Report System (Work placement project)

Live URL: N/A

The purpose of this site was to provide an internally hosted bug tracking system for a software development team that I was working with while on a university work placement at QinetiQ. I was responsible for all aspects of the project, including design, development, maintenance and administration of the web server on which it was hosted.

The project was coded in PHP with W3C standards compliant XHTML as the markup language. I made extensive use of CSS and also Javascript, which for the most part performed client-side validation of form data. The hosting server was running Apache, and MySQL for the database.

The different states a bug could go through are:

  • Open reports
    • No fix submitted
      • State: Unassigned
      • State: Assigned
    • Fix submitted but untested
      • State: Fix Needs Test
      • State: Partial Fix Needs Test
  • Closed reports
    • Fix submitted and tested
      • State: Fixed
      • State: Test Rejected
    • No fix specifically made
      • State: Misc Fix
      • State: Not A Bug

Reports in different states were seperated on a bug management page, with seperate pages for progressing to the next step for each state. The system had a detailed search page allowing very precise filtering for the results. Many of the selectable form fields in the system had to be dynamically generated from tables in the database, and because of this, the system had a menu management page for controlling these fields.

Site: VLE courses

Live URL: N/A

I have set up many new courses, and maintained many more on the VLEs at LCT. The examples shown below are two where I have been given more of a free reign regarding the design of the course.

Site: ForuMT bulletin board system

Live URL: Used on West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges and Embedding Equality and Diversity in Learning project

ForuMT was created originally for the WYCC site which required a basic discussion forum system for the users of the site. It is a continual work in progress, mostly driven by new feature requests. Currently, the forum has:

  • User registration with email verification.
  • Optional Guest user functionality.
  • 'Forums → Categories → Threads → Posts' layers.
  • Subset of common BBCode for forum posts.
  • Admin control to hide/show specific posts.
  • Users can be marked as banned.
  • Basic user profiles.

New features may be added as time goes by.

Site: Library Materials for Thomas Danby College

Live URL: N/A

This was a project that I adopted from my predecessor at LCT. Thomas Danby College required some learning materials to be converted to an online format with interactive elements. My part in this project was to finish off any areas that were incomplete, and I ended up cleaning up the design and improving the JavaScript controlling the interactive elements. I also modified some Flash movies in the process.

Site: LCT ITQ course site

Live URL: ITQ at Leeds College of Technology

I co-designed this site with a colleague at the college. The general layout was done by my colleague and I refined the design with CSS and an improved navigation bar.
